Focus Questions:

(            1)   Who are the authors?

The authors are Susan Richbourg Parker and William S. Coker.

       5) Identify and discuss the issue of “perspective” with regards to Anglo writings of Spanish Government

The issue of "perspective" with regards to Anglo writings of Spanish Government is that they were worried about how it may affect the way they were looked at and their interactions with people.

(       2)    How did Spain cede one territory and receive two back twenty years later?

Spain regained it at peace negotiations during the time for the Treaty of Versailles.

(5) Describe the two territories, their locations, capitols, and industry & resources

The two territories were divided at the Apalachicola River, ranging west to the Mississippi. They are governed from two capitols, Pensacola and St. Augustine. West Florida was the next one and extended from the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers on the east to the Mississippi River and the Isle of Orleans on the west.

(8) What are some of the turning points for the rapid turnover of FL (Spanish/British/Spanish/U.S.)

Some of the turning points were economic, financially, diplomatic, and somewhat military. There were changes with the cultures and religions that had an effect on the state. There was a decrease in the military which also made an impact on Florida.

(5) Present evidence of Political, Social, and Economic influence/affects in Chapter 10

Political: There were problems with the government being disrespected or looked down on because of resources needed to maintain troops. They didn't like how the finance and money were handled so the governor complained which resulted in the arrivals being late.

Social: Population grew significantly between 1795 and 1814. Although the population was continually growing in size, substantial territorial losses to the U.S. reduced the population in the area of West Florida by at least 50%.

Economic: The economy was affected in many ways throughout the years, but the main thing is the alteration of the Spanish Crown and government. There were complaints about the money needed to maintain troops and fortifications arriving on time.

(2) What do you find most interesting about this article?

Something I found most interesting about this article is about the Spanish Crown because I never really had much knowledge about it. The richer areas belonged to the Crown. The alteration of the Spanish Crown and government affected the economy due to money situations and where arrivals were being sent.

(10) ARTISTIC/CREATIVE Appendix Choices: (choose 1 – this assignment PLUS the chosen visual appendix will be your first Portfolio Entry) It MUST be a different form from your first Worksheet Assignment

1.       Create a timeline of Spanish/British/Spanish periods

2.       Print/draw a map outline and label sites of East/West FL with Capitols, rivers, ports & border state/regions

3.       Create an artistic interpretation of one of the treaties signing and flag changing ceremony that would have followed

4.       Select a section of text and present your own artistic interpretation of that text.  The finished piece must include the reference of the text.

The section of the text I chose to interpretate in my art below is the "East Florida's governors complaining about the irregular arrival of monies needed to maintain the troops and fortifications..." (Gannon, p. 165).
