Focus Questions

(1) Who is the author?

 Michael Gannon

(10) One argument presented is that Historic Accounts are not always cut & dry/ certain.  Discuss 2 examples within this chapter that supports this idea.  (pg. 18.28)

There are many events that do not clarify exactly what had happened.

- Many things "happened" as listed in the book. But there aren't causes for some of it. For example, on page 21, it says "No cause for the natives' violence is given in the record, whether it was provoked by earlier visits of slaving expeditions, or by the natives' own long tradition of intertribal warfare, or by simple fear of these strange creatures from another world."

- The exact locations of events could be wrong. At the very beginning of page 18, it says "The documents and maps are unclear on the point..."

      (1)  Explore the discussion of the Fountain of Youth and its validity (pg. 19).

The Fountain of Youth was on the island of Bimini. The fountain of waters was to "refresh: old men. According to page 19, it says "'that celebrated fountain which the Indians said turned men from old men [into] youths.'" It wasn't true or logical because it states throughout the text that the waters were mythical.

(5) Describe political or social policy mentioned within the chapter.  Be sure to include:

Old Spain rulers/ruling bodies: Hernando De Soto

New World rulers/ruling bodies: Juan Ponce (governor of the islands of Bimini and Florida), Charles V. (Carlos I, king of Spain), Fernando II

adelantado: Juan Ponce was named adelantado which is a self-financing conqueror and direct representative of the king.

Requirirmiento: It was read aloud in Spanish for the natives who couldn't comprehend it.

New Laws of 1542: 1542 was the year of de Soto's death. None of the 12 priests appeared to have had the vision and moral courage of Montesinos where treatment of the natives was concerned.

       (1)  What animal was introduced to Florida by de Soto?

Long-legged Spanish range pigs were introduced to Florida by de Soto.

(2)  What is the “microbial invasion”?

The natives had no immunities. They got smallpox, measles, typhoid fever, and much more. It resulted in many tragic deaths and declination.

(5) Present reasons supporting settlement of Florida AND arguments against the settlement of Florida based on the text of Chapter 2

 Supporting:

- New ships and bases established.

- New tools, supplies, and technologies that were beneficial.

Against:

- There were many illnesses involved such as smallpox, measles, typhoid fever, and much more.

- Many unidentified diseases which resulted in most dying.

- Left behind no settlement, no farm, no hospital, no flag. A lot was damaged.

       (1)  What do you find most interesting about this article?

I found many things interesting throughout reading chapter 2 but the one thing that stood out to me is all they went through to get food and supplies. It took a lot of difficulties and obstacles to do things like this and it just really amazed me. According to page 25, it says "Killing a horse every third day for food, they fashioned the flayed and tanned leg hides into freshwater bags and used deerskins and hollowed logs to make a bellows with which they operated a forge for melting down their swords, stirrups, spurs, and crossbow, iron into saws, axes, and nails. " There was so much more also. For example, they used horses' manes and tails for ropes. It took a lot of hard work to get what they needed.
